So Far Away ...
So, I'm blogging right now from my work, which is now Jenny Craig H.O. (They call it "Home Office" ... prob. in some feeble attempt to make it sound more "Friendly" and less "Cold and Corporate", even though, that's pretty much what it always is when you sit in a cubicle.
Have you ever experienced one of those moments when you're looking through old friends photos, or those who live "back home" and realize how completely removed from their lives you've become (By way of distance, or maybe just lack of time).
Sure, technology enables us to shrink our physical surroundings and make our little "world" more closely intertwined with each other. By the modern day vantages of Facebook or myspace we're able to keep "in touch" with friends and family, see their photos-- see what's goin' on in their lives.
But I wonder sometimes, if our definition of what we think being "close" to someone is, is in reality, getting colder and colder, like this big white building where I work now.
With each little work station compartmentalized neatly, all the walls looking exactly the same ... we become removed from the REAL personal connection of a warm smile or hug and a soothing cup of something warm (tea?) and replace it with an email, a "wall posting" or a "ooo, look at how cool I am and what I'm doing on the weekends" picture.
I think it's affecting our culture to a point where we are getting closer and closer to a "matrix" type future, where we live "virtually" instead of the REAL: Face to face, mono e mono, I-love you-and-care-about-you-world.
It's great to keep in touch, but what about BEING touched, with a hug, or a smile? Nothing can replace the genuinity (yes, I just made that word up) of that, it's what we're made for.
I only hope that this blog serves more of a glimpse into myself than what I can give my family and friends, being so far away, physically from everyone. I hope it never comes across as cold, or trite, but a real glimpse into my days and my soul.
Till next blog.
